A collection of 'zines created by elementary school students. |
' Zines are little magazines with a small print-run and are usually made with a photocopier. If you are unfamiliar with ' zines, I suggest you check out this very informative presentation by Alexa Wheeler. (I would not suggest using the presentation with elementary students due to some of the content, but it is the perfect introduction for teachers.)
'Zines offer a visual way to work on persuasive writing skills and to feel like publishers.
Print off this PDF (I suggest copying it double-sided.)
Use pages 3 and 4 to get students to do some warm up writing about their topic. Then, have them copy the text from each question onto the corresponding page. (Prompt #1 should be copied onto page 1 and so forth.) Students can collage pictures and letters onto each rectangle to make their pages more visually appealing.
Once students get the hang of making the 'zine, they can try making one with out the writing prompt on pages 3 and 4. |

This video shows you step by step how students can make a story quilt.
I show it to my students before they make their quilt, so they know the steps involved.
The lesson plan for this can be found here: Faith Ringgold Inspired Quilt Making Lesson Plan

I recently created a little story prompt worksheet that I use with my students when we make out Faith Ringgold inspired story quilts. The fist page helps students think about the elements of their story and the back has a square shaped space to sketch out what will be on the final artwork.

My Life in Records is a comic book series that tells the story of three brothers who are obsessed with music. Into My Heart is the second issue of the series and begins with Tom’s brush with death in a swimming pool. This experience combined with a kiddie gospel record gets Tom asking lots of questions.
For instance:
What is the difference between the Holy Ghost and Scary Ghosts?
And:
Does Jesus stick out of people if He comes to live inside the heart of a person who is shorter than Him?
If you contribute to this project, you will have your name printed in the back of the book. For a little extra, there are lots more goodies like original artwork, silk screened prints and other comic books by me.
"One of the things instantly recognizable about My Life In Records is that it captures, in visual language, the magical crackle and pop of a vinyl record being played. There are also some early snippets of song lyrics, those types of generational songs that define us. So, for all those people who say that music doesn’t work well in comics, this one proves them wrong. Thomas displays the lively colorful reds of guitar strings humming, and builds a tale about childhood memories, music, art, and pop culture like Sesame Street being the ephemeral soundtrack to a person’s life." Poopsheet Foundation
"It’s always a little tricky to pull off music in comics, but I think Grant nailed it here." Optical Sloth
So what are you waiting for? Be part of this project!
